it's the season for harvesting the radish and issa was a newcomer who needed direction from a local who knows the way, but everyone was busy at their job of plucking out the their precious crop.
finally he found this farmer who had just successfully unearthed one of his radishes who would tell him the way by pointing with the radish he was holding in his hand.

fuuryuu no hajime ya oku no taue uta
the origin of stylish elegance-
songs in the paddy field.

the essence of good taste and culture lies not in elaborate poshness or padded extravagance.

the stoicism and almost heroic tolerance of the japanese people in face of the tragic aftermath of earthquake and tsunami in NE japan is indeed admirable.
when i asked of my sensei siragiku (https://www.deviantart.com/siragiku) how he is doing, he said,
"大丈夫だよ。
日本の庶民は優秀です。逆境にも強い。私も庶民の一人です。"
(don't worry. the common people in japan are excellent people, especially in face of adversity. i am one of those commoners.)

What makes a good haiku?
regretfully, i am not up to the task of joining in the november haikuthon 2010 held by %the-haiku-club (https://www.deviantart.com/the-haiku-club).
i think i will provide some haiku tidbits for fellow haijin and i hope it might be useful in one way or another.
i read essays about haiku by koyama kouji (小山孝治), and found his explanation quite interesting and useful. i think i will share with the english-speaking haijin here.
