灯篭を三たびかかげぬ露ながら
tourou wo mitabi kakagenu tsuyu nagara

the third time
lanterns are hung up,
together with dewdrops.

lantern is a kigo for lunar seventh month when people put up lanterns  in remembrance of their dead loved ones.
Buson referred to the funeral wakes of his recently dead friends. it was the third time in a short while.

lanterns wet with dew are no longer romantic as the usual tones of Buson's verses but he conveyed a rather sad and solemn tone.

i chose to feature this verse because i had a few friends passed away in the year of 2010. one of the reasons why getting older is sad is to witness the end of people whom you have grown to love and cherish. sigh.
