masaoka shiki is one of the contemporary haiku masters who advocated shasei style of writing.
shasei means 'still-life drawing': write what you see, as plainly as possible, no pun, no wordplay. as a picture paints a thousand words, a haiku conjures a full spectrum of colors and emotions.

mount tsukuba has long been a subject of poetic expressions. it was well known from the catch-phrase 'fuji in the west, tsukuba in the east', numbered among the 100 most scenic mountains in japan.

you can read more about mount tsukuba in this [link]

First learn the meaning of what you say, and then speak.
Epictetus

“The world we live in is vastly different from the world we think we live in.” Nicholas Taleb
:iconiscariot-priest:
I've always though of Buson as the more painterly writer - being the painter after all. BTW, have you read any of the poems by Shiki's disciples? I've read of them, but haven't yet read their actual poetry.

--
“Now me lay down to sleep.
Mow da zeebas down like sheep.
Give dem to me nice and dead.
Me no happy ‘til me fed.”
-Bedtime prayer of crocs, Pearls Before Swine
:iconmoyanii:
shiki's most famous disciple was perhaps kyoshi. i've read many of kyoshi's. but truly my heart is still more toward the old classical masters.

:iconkorpihunaja:
shiki indeed is not only the most recent of the great four haiku masters - even if sometimes excluded - he is the most solemn one. interesting how different outlooks issa and shiki had on their lives, which certainly haven't been pleasant for either of them. but don't get me wrong, i do like shiki's work, even if he comes out perhaps a bit too strict regrading haiku rules.

interesting idea with the visual poetry contest though, even if i doubt that i have anything of use... but i will think on it.

woods.
:iconiscariot-priest:
I guess Shiki is the true "haiku master' as he's the one that decided to call the damn things haiku in the first place, rather than treating it as an opener to renga.
