Corralling CrayfishA deep drainage ditch ran through our neighborhood and right behind my childhood home. In Spring it would flood and we would bike around the streets in a foot or two of water. In Summer when the water was low we would swing on low branches, fence with willow reeds, and study the curious creatures that shared it with us. In Autumn there were always plenty of tomatoes, squash, and pumpkins to throw at each other and carve. In Winter we would sled down the precipitous southern bank trying to avoid patches of thin ice. It was a smelly, nasty hole filled with leeches, chiggers, and fish that bit, and heaven for a pack of wild children like us. corralling crayfishbehind a makeshift dam a leech on my toeour neighborhood was poorbut had the coolest playground
